Dr. Michael Yabsley, PhD

Michael J. Yabsley is a Professor of Wildlife Disease Ecology at the University of Georgia. He has an MS in zoology (Parasitology) from Clemson University and a PhD in Infectious Diseases from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. Dr. Yabsley teaches several courses in veterinary parasitology and principals of wildlife diseases at the undergraduate, graduate, and veterinary student levels. He is passionate about working with students and mentors students at all levels (high school, undergraduate, veterinary, MS, and PhD) interested in various aspects of wildlife disease ecology.
He has an active research program that primarily investigates wildlife diseases from a one health approach with an emphasis on the role of animals as reservoirs or hosts for zoonotic and/or vector-borne pathogens. Research interesting in recent years include ticks and tick-borne pathogens, guinea worm ecology, raccoon roundworm in people and animals (wildlife/domestic), and bird parasites and pathogens. This research has led to >245 peer-reviewed authored or co-authored publications and he has been honored with several teaching and research awards.
