Elizabeth "Buffy" Howerth, DVM, PhD

Dr. (Buffy) Howerth is a veterinarian (MSU ’78) who is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (anatomic; ’84) and has been a practicing pathologist for over 40 years (yikes!).  One of her many interests is the pathology and diagnosis of infectious diseases, an interest that was fueled by living in southern Africa for 3 years early in her career.

Over the years she has become an expert in the use of electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry for the diagnosis of infectious and neoplastic diseases. Her love of infectious disease, wildlife, and endothelium lead to a PhD (UGA ’86) involving the pathogenesis of bluetongue virus hemorrhagic disease in white-tailed deer. Over the years, her research has involved other diseases at the livestock (and human)-wildlife interface such as pseudorabies, vesicular stomatitis, avian influenza, and West Nile. Currently she also does collaborative research on a variety of cancers and stroke and traumatic brain injury in large animal models. She is also involved in teaching undergraduate, professional veterinary and graduate students and training anatomic pathology residents.
